And that's the good news. The hope starts with the cockatoos increasing their number in Rasa. This breeding season proved successful with more eggs hatching and more clutches surviving. We believe that the cockatoos feel safer now. They can go out without fearing that they'll come back to an empty nest. After so many years, they can become parents again, rear their young, feed them and teach them how to fly. It's an exciting prospect. After all no Philippine wildlife has crawled out of the endangered list.

There is so much hope on the island that the program's life has been extended two more years whereas it would have ended this year. Potential nesting, roosting, and feeding trees have been replanted. Meanwhile, nesting boxes will be set up next breeding season to compensate for the scant sturdy nesting trees. Mangrove areas have been reinforced and poachers have been rehabilitated. The local government of Narra have pledged all out support and so have the provincial government and the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development.

Hope also springs from the enthusiasm of the people of Narra. Eyes have been opened now. Hearts are more compassionate and the attitude is becoming that of understanding and respect.

Hope is indeed a powerful emotion and we thrive on it. How we wish you can see it for yourself.
